10 Questions with 8KOunt Print E-mail

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last several years you recognize the name 8KOunt. If you are a music fan you have seen them. If you are in a band you've played with them. They have the riffs, the hooks, and the image needed to stand out in today's saturated musical landscape. The guys could write a manual on how to constantly develop your bands sound and image. If you can say anything about this band it is that they are not sitting on their ass waiting for someone to give them a break. They are out there trying to take what they need to get where they want to be and still manage to stay humble along the way. Check out this months 10Q with 8KOunt.

1. How long has the band been together and what is your current lineup?

8KOunt has been around for about six years. Currently we have Tarry Summers on drums, Niki Tirey on guitar, Robby D’Lor on bass and I James Sayer handle the vocals. It’s your basic rock four-piece.

 2. How would you describe your group’s style? What are the bands collective influences?

Our style is Big Rock- it’s a modern rock sound and tends to be on the heavier side, but with great groove and more hooks than an Alaskan fishing boat.

3. What is the bands songwriting process? Is there a main writer or is it a group effort? Explain?

Niki or one of the other guys will usually bring a riff that they will jam on for a bit. If it catches on, I’ll add a melody to it and then lyrics from there. Getting a good melody is key to having a catchy song.

4. What are your current goals as a band? (Working on CD, Booking, Tour, etc.)

We’ve recently finished recording the songs for a new EP coming out in February. It’s called “Getaway Car” and will be doing a big release party at McGuffy’s on February 21st. We’ll have Chapter of Progress and Seconds Fall on the show as well, so you know it will slam like no other!   We’re also looking to debut our video for our first single off the EP, Ashes to Ashes, at the show as well. From there it’s mostly about selling enough CD’s and downloads to support the habit.

5. What goals have you set for yourself in the past that you have or have not achieved and why?

There have been so many. One of them was just to get the EP done by the end of 2008. Of course, we still have yet to send them out for print. I think that was mostly due to the holidays and me being overly picky about some things.   6. What Dayton clubs would we be able to see you perform?   The Foundry is closed now so McGuffy’s would be about it right now.

7. Do you have many out of town shows? Where?

We’re doing more and more- pretty much throughout the Midwest, but we’re trying to get up around the Cleveland area more. The Cincinnati area has been good for us at times as well. We even headlined the WEBN fireworks down there for Labor Day- fantastic!

8. Give us some details on one of your most memorable moments as a band? Good or Bad.

The first major band we opened for was Shinedown and that was here in Dayton at the Foundry. The place was packed and it was great to have all those people basically eating out of our hands- jumping up and down, singing along and screaming like crazy.   Of course, we’ve had a number of great things happen, but that was one that was specifically Dayton related and you asked for one, but I digress.

9. What advice would you give someone that is just starting to play the Dayton scene?

Work on your chops and make sure that your unit is tight and ready to perform before you do it live. Have something to sell or give to the fans that are there and be cool to everybody- nobody likes someone who thinks they are too good for other people.  Make friends with other bands, DJ’s and be sure to get on Dayton Bands often!

10. Who are some of your favorite Dayton bands?

Why, Chapter of Progress and Seconds Fall of course- that’s why we’re having them on our release show!   There are actually a number of bands from around here that we like though- Orange Willard is a great band, TINJ, Fluwid, Occams Razor, Once Upon A Tragedy, Myrna Loy, Silk Abrasion, Small Town Sleeper, Shrug and Felix Tucker are pretty sweet too. On the cover band side, Blindspot, Ithika, Ozzmosis and Velvet Crush are probably my fav’s.
